Deer jumps from newspaper parking garage

By From staff reports

A deer jumped from the second floor of a downtown Charleston parking garage Saturday afternoon.

The doe had wandered into the Charleston Newspapers parking garage building at Virginia and McFarland streets around 2 p.m. The animal got up the ramp to the second floor when a man got out of an elevator, spooking the deer. The deer jumped from the Virginia Street side of the building.

Passersby and newspaper employees stayed with the injured deer until a Charleston police officer arrived.

Witnesses say, as the officer prepared to put down the deer, a car engine started, spooking the doe again and causing it to run away on its badly injured legs. The officer was then unable to safely shoot the deer because of the surroundings, according to a Kanawha County Metro 911 dispatcher.
