The Energy Express site at Sharon Dawes Elementary in Cabin Creek is holding its annual school supply drive, auction, and open house dinner on Monday at 6p.m.
Energy Express, an award-winning summer reading program serving children in Kanawha County, will host the open house for members of the Cabin Creek community. The event is free and open to the public, and a spaghetti dinner will be provided. Energy Express is also holding a school supplies drive to get the children of Cabin Creek ready for the upcoming school year. At our open house we will have many auction items that can be bid upon by those who bring in school supplies.
Those attending the open house will learn about Energy Express and how it to provides learning opportunities and nutrition during the summer months, when children are most at risk for falling into the "summer slide" - when children fall behind academically because they do not build or maintain their reading skills throughout the summer months.
College students and community residents serving as AmeriCorps members are supporting the program, which continues through Friday.
Available at 80 sites statewide, the Energy Express program helps about 3,400 children who are entering first through sixth grades. It is funded by, among others, the WVU Extension Service, Volunteer WV, the state Department of Education's Summer Food Service Program and the state Department of Education and the Arts.
