The director of the American Civil Liberties Union of West Virginia says she is leaving for "other opportunities."

An interim director, who was formerly a board member, started this week.

Jennifer Meinig took over as director for the organization in April of 2014.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to work for justice in the Mountain State," she said. "It was a team effort and together we built a platform to tackle important issues facing West Virginians. The work was challenging and rewarding, but now it's time to pass the torch."

She said she is "looking into other opportunities" but hasn't yet made final plans.

Jeff Martin started working as interim executive director on Tuesday. He has worked on several political campaigns and for the West Virginia Education Association. He also spent four and a half years in the U.S. Army and deployed to Afghanistan in 2011-12.

He is obtaining his Juris Doctor and Master of Public Administration degrees through the WVU College of Law and the John D. Rockefeller School of Politics and Public Policy.

The organizations aims to hire a new director by the end of the summer, before he goes back to school.

"I want to continue the work that Jennifer's done," Martin said. "She's done a good job here. We were lucky to have her. I just want to pick up where she left off."
