State health care agencies are reminding health care providers that new federal billing codes will take effect on Thursday.

The state Department of Health and Human Resources, Public Employees Insurance Agency, and Children's Health Insurance Program put out a joint notice Monday reminding all health care providers that new coding procedures will be required on Oct. 1, as part of a transition by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

The change from ICD-9 to ICD-10 codes effects all HIPAA-covered entities, including health care providers, payers, clearinghouses, and billing services, among others.

The DHHR's Bureau of Medical Services is required to implement the new coding in order to continue receiving federal matching federal funds from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMS.

Claims dated after Oct. 1 cannot be accepted with the old billing codes, and those services will not be reimbursed until they are properly coded by the provider.
