Marshall University's doctor of psychology program has been ranked favorably by a counseling degree review website.

According to Best Counseling Degrees, Marshall's program is the 38th best in the country, out of 77 American Psychological Association-accredited programs. The APA, which is the largest professional organization for psychologists in the United States, accredited Marshall's program in 2006.

The ranking puts Marshall in the top half of APA accredited programs. It's based on student performance.

Keith Beard, director of Marshall's program, said he's pleased with the ranking and having success recognized.

Rankings were based on program pass rates on the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology, a test all psychologist must pass to become licensed. They also use data on internship matching, program completion and cost of the program. Marshall's pass rate is 67 percent. Almost half of Marshall's psychology doctoral students get an APA accredited internship, and 84 percent go on to receive their license.

The program admitted its first class in 2002. It prepares doctoral-level psychologists for work in rural and other under-served communities.
