Kroger has hired 50 veterans and their family members in six states as part of a larger effort to employ military service members and their families.

The Cincinnati-based grocery chain announced Wednesday that 50 people were hired in Virginia, Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina and West Virginia during recent hiring events.

"We are delighted with this result," said Allison McGee, spokeswoman for Kroger's Mid-Atlantic Division. "Although the event ended yesterday, veterans still are coming into our stores for interviews, and we are welcoming them."

The company announced that it was still looking to fill around 900 jobs at 120 stores in those six states.

Last year Kroger hired more than 6,000 veterans and has hired more than 29,000 since 2009 as part of its commitment to veterans.

Veterans and their families who remain interested in a job at Kroger should complete an application online at jobs.kroger.com. They can select the store where they prefer to work and will be contacted by Kroger.
