Top officials from West Virginia University's Institute of Technology and Concord University met Wednesday to discuss ways the two schools can collaborate in Beckley.

WVU Tech President Carolyn Long and Concord President Kendra Boggess met Wednesday in Beckley to start collaborative talks, WVU Tech spokeswoman Jennifer Wood Cunningham said. No decisions were made, she added.

The two schools will soon inhabit facilities in Beckley.

WVU Tech will relocate to Raleigh County's largest city in 2017 when it vacates its current campus in Montgomery, a move the West Virginia University Board of Governors approved earlier this month. The Athens, West Virginia-based Concord University already has a satellite campus in Beckley.

WVU President Gordon Gee, who helped facilitate the decision to relocate Tech, said in an interview with MetroNews that some are worried the new campus could "swallow up" smaller schools in the area. He said schools like Concord and Bluefield State College, which also has a satellite campus in Beckley, have a future there, but should collaborate with WVU.

WVU Tech will transition students to the Beckley campus over the next two years. Starting next year, first-year students will be admitted to the new campus. Sophomores, juniors and seniors, as well as the sports programs, will remain in Montgomery until 2017.
