Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin announced Wednesday the awarding of more than $3.6 million in grant funding to support child advocacy, domestic violence and sexual assault programs in communities throughout the state.
The money will go to 65 community support groups and justice programs, Tomblin said in a news release. Funding was awarded by the office for Victims of Crimes, the Office of Justice Programs of the U.S. Justice Department.
The City of Charleston will be given money for a victim services coordinator in the Charleston Police Department.
"The communities we live in are more than just places we put down roots and raise a family. They are places we call home, and they should be places we feel safe," Tomblin said in the release. "Unfortunately, that is not a reality for so many men, women and children who are victims of violence, abuse and crime. This grant funding helps support community-based programs so many of our friends and neighbors rely on to provide the services they need to get back on their feet."
