GAP MILLS, W.Va. (AP) - A former resort that hosted U.S. presidents and war heroes is being sold at auction.
The Sweet Springs Resort on 23 acres in Monroe County will be auctioned on Nov. 12. Joe R. Pyle Complete Auction and Realty Service is handling the public auction.
Sweet Springs opened in the late 1700s, and a 110,000-square-foot hotel was completed in 1839. George Washington and Robert E. Lee were visitors. The property includes an 1830s brick bathhouse where warm mineral springs continue to bubble.
The state bought the property in 1941 and converted into a hospital for tuberculosis patients. It operated from 1945 until 1991 as a home for the elderly.
The facility has been closed since 1993, and several auctions for the property have been held since.
