MILL CREEK, W.Va. (AP) - About 170 people could be out of work come Christmas day after the closure of a coal company.
Local news organizations report Carter Roag Coal Company issued a Worker Adjustment Retraining Act notice for all employees of the mine and preparation plant Monday.
Randolph County Commission President Michael Taylor says the county will try to address the lost livelihood of the workers. He says he hopes the county can work with other organizations to help them find employment.
The closure will also have an economic impact. Taylor says the closure of the operation will mean a reduction in tax revenue for the county.
Carter Roag is a subsidiary of United Coal Company. Mark McCormick, general counsel and vice president of United Coal Company, says the company doesn't expect to reopen.
