Marshall University unveiled on Tuesday a new online training program meant to teach students, staff and faculty what to do if there is an active shooter on the school's campus, according to a news release.

The program uses protocols from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigations and can be accessed at www.marshall.edu/safety/accessing-online-training.

"Because active shooter situations are often over within 10 to 15 minutes, before law enforcement arrives on the scene and standard evacuation procedures and lock-down protocols may not apply, individuals must be prepared both mentally and physically to deal with an active shooter situation," said Tracy Smith, director of health and safety at Marshall University.
