Care for the caregiver

Putnam County Aging Program is hosting Care for the Caregiver workshops led by Carol Matheny of the Palliative Care Center. Classes will be held at the Hometown Senior Center on Wednesdays from 10 to 11 a.m., Aug. 24, 31 and Sept. 7. The Buffalo Senior Center class will be held on Tuesdays from 9 to 10 a.m. starting Aug. 30 and will continue on Sept. 6, 13 and 20. Putnam Aging is wrapping up its John Henson class in Hurricane from 10 to 11 a.m. on this Tuesday. The public is still welcome to join for the last class there. A more intensive caregiver training class will be held at Putnam County Aging Program Central Office in St. Albans starting in October and will run for 12 weeks for 4 hours each week. Contact Karen Johnson at Putnam County Aging Program 304-755-2385 if interested in attending any of the classes being offered. The sessions are free of charge.

Tribute to first responders

The Kanawha City Community Association will honor the police, fire fighters and EMTs who serve the Kanawha City Area at noon on Saturday at Horace Mann Middle School. A Tribute to First Responders will recognize a fireman, policeman and EMT who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in serving this neighborhood. Neighborhood Watch groups will be present to share their experiences in setting up a Watch group. Police and fire departments will have the vehicles and equipment they use to protect us on site for inspection.

Senior dance

South Charleston Community Center will host a senior dance (50 and older) from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Center, located at 601 Jefferson Road, South Charleston. Appetizers, door prizes and a 50/50 drawing will be held. DJ will be Chuck Swigger. Call 304-744-4731 for information.

Golf scramble

The 2016 Charleston Area Alliance Golf Scramble is scheduled for Sept. 12 at Edgewood Country Club. Titled sponsor for the fundraiser is United Bank. Registration for foursomes is 10 a.m., lunch follows at 11 a.m., and a shotgun start follows at 11:30 a.m. A dinner and an awards banquet will follow. The event will feature a hole-in-one contest with a $10,000 grand prize. Proceeds from the golf outing support the Alliance's job-creation and community enhancement programs. The cost per foursome is $600. The cost per individual golfer is $150. Those prices increase to $800 and $250 after Sept. 8. Tournament sponsorships are available at $2,500. Eagle sponsorships are $1,000. Hole sponsorships are available at $500.
