In Around West Virginia: at least one person died from the especially dangerous heroin that hit Huntington on Monday, racial justice in the state, Clarksburg businesses to begin selling mimosas on Sundays, and more.
n Huntington officials say at least one death is likely connected to the batch of heroin that resulted in more than two dozen overdoses Monday, according to The Herald-Dispatch. Authorities originally said 26 people had overdosed in about four hours. They later told the Gazette-Mail that 27 people had overdosed, but no one had died. Now authorities are saying one man who was taken to Cabell-Huntington Hospital later died. A second death on Wednesday may or may not be connected to the same batch of heroin.
n The State Journal covered a KIDS COUNT report that reviewed racial injustice in West Virginia. While the per capita income of white families in the state is $23,215, per capita income for black families is $17,084. And while 27 percent of white children under age 5 live in poverty, 57 percent of black children under age 5 live below the poverty line.
n Clarksburg businesses can start serving alcohol at 10 a.m. this Sunday. Clarksburg City Council passed an ordinance allowing Sunday morning alcohol sales at the council meeting Thursday, according to The Exponent Telegram.
n The FBI is looking for a man that investigators believe robbed banks in Charles Town, Inwood, Martinsburg and Virginia and Maryland, according to MetroNews. They are offering a $15,000 reward for information. The man allegedly robbed the banks with a sawed-off shotgun between March 2015 and Jan. 2016.
