An out-of-state man wanted on a felony charge fled Charleston police, speeding the wrong way down several roads, before sailing over railroad tracks and crashing on Elizabeth Street Tuesday, according to police.
Police attempted to pull over Che Dushon Lark, 41, on Interstate 77 for speeding while traveling north in a Hyundai Sonata shortly after 11 a.m., according to Sgt. Mark Kinder, the Charleston Police Department's traffic division commander.
Kinder said during a news conference Tuesday that Nashville police will travel to Charleston to bring Lark back to face his felony charge. Charleston Lt. Steve Cooper said Lark was wanted on a prescription fraud charge in Nashville.
Lark allegedly took the Leon Sullivan Way exit and began to stop his vehicle in a parking area before taking off.
Police opted not to pursue him for safety reasons. Lark then allegedly sped the wrong way down several Charleston roads before police finally caught him. He allegedly reached speeds of 70 to 80 miles per hour.
Lark was going so fast he jumped the railroad tracks on Elizabeth Street by about 20 or 30 feet, then wrecked, busting his radiator and disabling his vehicle, police said.
He then ran and scaled the fence to enter Laidley Field. When he scaled the fence to leave the field, police were waiting.
In addition to his previous charges, Kinder said, Lark will also face felony and misdemeanor traffic charges in West Virginia.
Lark had not been arraigned as of mid-Tuesday afternoon. Kinder said he was still in the hospital, due to a cut on his arm from scaling the fence and other crash-related injuries.
