CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - After lawmakers banned abortions 20 weeks or later after conception, West Virginia officials say four abortions in that timeframe last year occurred to save the mother or because the fetus wasn't viable.
A Department of Health and Human Resources report Monday details 864 abortions from May 26, 2015, through December 2015.
The 20-week law has exceptions for mothers risking death or serious impairment, or if the fetus isn't viable.
Last year, the Republican-led Legislature and socially conservative Democrats overrode Democratic Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin in his second-straight year vetoing the bill over constitutionality concerns.
The report says 176 abortions used dilation and evacuation, considered the safest second-trimester method.
This year, lawmakers essentially banned it by overriding Tomblin's veto of another bill over constitutionality.
Anti-abortion advocates described the method as dismemberment.
