A Huntington man tried to carry a loaded gun onto a plane at Yeager Airport Wednesday, according to police.

Thomas Marcum, 31, was cited for violation of airport regulations, a misdemeanor, according to Yeager Airport Police Chief Joe Crawford.

Crawford said Marcum told police he forgot the gun was in his military-style backpack.

Before a new state law took effect in May, police would have also charged Marcum for carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, Crawford said.

Violating airport regulations is punishable by a fine of up to $100 and a jail sentence of up to 30 days.

A Transportation Security Administration officer found the gun as the backpack moved along the conveyor belt through the security checkpoint X-ray, according to a news release from the TSA.

Airport operations were not affected, according to the release.

The TSA reminded Yeager passengers that weapons are not permitted in carry-on bags, but can be checked if unloaded, properly packed and declared to the airline.

In April, the Gazette-Mail reported that four people had been detected trying to carry loaded guns onto planes at Yeager this year, including three within one week.

Crawford said Thursday that six people have been detected in 2016.
