BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - The National Weather Service says a recent severe storm in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle did not produce a tornado.

Tornado warnings were issued Thursday in the region, including in Berkeley Springs and Martinsburg. But media outlets report the weather service inspected the damage Friday and determined no tornado had occurred. Instead, trees were knocked down by a microburst with straight-line winds of up to 70 mph.

The storms also produced golf-ball size hail and knocked out power to thousands across northern and eastern sections of the state.
