A vigil for the victims of a mass shooting at an Orlando gay bar will be held at a Charleston church this evening.
Standing in Solidarity: A vigil offering peace and healing for Orlando and the LGBT community, will be at 7:30 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1105 Quarrier Street. The church, Islamic Association of West Virginia and Covenant House are hosting the event together.
The shooting, which is being investigated as an act of terrorism, left at least 50 people dead and 50 more wounded in what is being called the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
A law enforcement official told media outlets that shooter Omar Mateen pledged allegiance to the leader of the Islamic State.
The Islamic Association on Sunday released a statement condemning the shooting.
"We denounce acts of extreme cruelty and violence without reservation, and we offer our sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the victims and their families," the statement read in part. "We pray for the recovery of those injured, for the comfort of grieving friends and family, and for the healing and safety of LGBTQ communities the world over."
