n A Greenbrier County doctor will lose her medical license after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter, according to The Register-Herald. Leslie Abigail Winters unintentionally caused the death of Marcus Steven Vaughn by writing him a prescription for methadone, even though she knew he abused controlled substances, according to the indictment. Winters entered a no contest plea Monday. She will perform 400 hours of community service in the next year.
n Almost 100 people turned out for the first reading of a nondiscrimination ordinance in Charles Town, The Journal reports. More than 30 people signed up to speak during the public comment period. If the ordinance passes, Charles Town will join several other cities in West Virginia that have passed ordinances extending protection from discrimination to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents.
n A Martinsburg man killed 14 pet fish by pouring bleach in the tank, The Herald-Mail reports. Justin Wayne Phillips, 32, of Farm Pond Lane, was charged with animal cruelty and destruction of property. Police said his wife was "extremely distraught."
n A woman died in an inflatable kayaking accident Monday night on the Shenandoah River near Harpers Ferry, MetroNews reports. Several people were tied together on inflatable kayaks that capsized after becoming entangled on a tree branch. Katrina Meeks drowned, while the others were rescued.
