Winfield - The Putnam County American Federation of Teachers union honored retiring Superintendent Chuck Hatfield at Tuesday night's school board meeting.
Angie Turkelson, president of AFT of Putnam County Schools and a fifth grade teacher at Connor Street Elementary, thanked Hatfield for his service to the district.
Turkelson said Hatfield always welcomed the unions views and that they were able to work cooperatively to ensure Putnam County Schools is one of the best districts in the state.
To honor Hatfield's service, Turkelson presented a check from the AFT for $250 to the Back to School Blast fund, which provides backpacks and school supplies for Putnam County students in need.
Hatfield is retiring and will be replaced by current Boone County Schools Superintendent John Hudson.
Hatfield and Assistant Superintendents Brad Hodges and Penny Fisher, all have agreed to contracted services, which the board approved unanimously Monday night.
"We have asked them and they said they would stick around to help with transition since we're losing our top three leaders in the school system, unfortunately," said Board President William Legg.
The last day of school for students in Putnam County is Thursday, and there will be a two-hour early out for a faculty senate meeting. June 10 is the last day of school for teachers.
Hatfield also announced that Buffalo Elementary School may soon get funding for renovations, but nothing was confirmed yet.
"We're really excited that we may get some funding to make some upgrades and renovations to Buffalo Elementary," Hatfield said.
The next Putnam County Board of Education meeting will be at 7 p.m. June 21 in the Board of Education building in Winfield.
