HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) - The town of Paw Paw, West Virginia, says it has taken steps to ensure that a chemical spill in the Potomac River from a Maryland mill won't contaminate its drinking water.

The Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin says its model shows that the latex product spilled last week at a Verso paper mill in Luke, Maryland, reached the Paw Paw water intake late Sunday.

Town official Tina Lewis says the town stored enough water ahead of the plume to supply its 240 customers during the 32 hours it takes the plume to pass.

The commission says the plume should reach an intake for Berkeley County, West Virginia, Oct. 7, and one near Sharpsburg, Maryland, Oct. 10.

Maryland regulators say they don't believe the substance poses a health concern.
