When Jake Tapper, chief Washington correspondent for CNN and host of The Lead, invited Dilbert creator Scott Adams to appear on his show, he expected to have an interesting discussion about Donald Trump.
What he didn't expect was an invitation from Adams - to guest-draw the Dilbert strip.
The outcome of that conversation will be enjoyed this week by readers of more than 2,000 newspapers worldwide, including the Charleston Gazette-Mail.
"We were chatting during the commercial break before one of these interviews," said Tapper, "and I let it slip that I was a failed cartoonist."
Adams, who had been resting his drawing hand, took the hint.
"I think readers will enjoy seeing [Tapper's] take on the art, which came out great," said Adams. "He's way better than I expected!"
Before Jake Tapper found success as a journalist, he drew for the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Roll Call and Washington City Paper, but his artwork was never syndicated - until now.
Tapper's interpretation of Scott Adams' Dilbert will run today through Saturday. Readers can expect to see the familiar Dilbert characters, drawn in Tapper's style, along with Adams' original writing.
The one-of-a-kind strips will be auctioned off to raise money for Homes for Our Troops, an organization that builds mortgage-free, specially designed homes for the most disabled veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq. The auction will take place today through Monday. For additional information, visit dilbert.com/jake-tapper-auction.
