Terry Lowry, historian and musician, will present a free lecture on "Rocking the Kanawha: The Golden Age of Music in the Kanawha Valley" at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Archives and History Library at the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex. Lowry is a veteran guitarist of the Charleston music scene. He is a staff historian with Archives and History and has written several books on the Civil War in West Virginia. Buffalo Heritage Days will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Buffalo Academy in The Buffalo Historic Square. Byrnes Battery Co. D Civil War reenactors will be featured. Dan Chandler, American Legion Post 187, Winfield, will present a Civil War slide show. Quilt-making will be presented by the Women of Buffalo United Methodist Church. Reed Family Baskets will feature basket making. Coopering (wooden bucket making) will be presented by Joe Smith. Special Olympics Kanawha County will hold its 11th Annual Bowl-a-thon on Saturday at the Towne 'n' Country Lanes in Nitro. Money raised will help pay for the athletes' participation in events, for sports equipment, uniforms, as well as food and lodging when teams travel to state and national events. WVU Kanawha County Extension Service will sponsor a Bonsai workshop from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Forren Soil, 601 Central Ave. Presenter will be Dr. Ed Suson, local Bonsai enthusiast and expert. Beginning bonsai information will be given along with information on re-potting your existing bonsai and wiring the plants to shape them. Anyone who has been in an earlier Bonsai class, can bring their plants for Dr. Suson to receive tips on shaping the plant. Dr. Suson and Forren Soil will have "future Bonsai" plants for sale. Capitol YouthBuild in Charleston is accepting applications from youth, ages 17-24, who have dropped out of school, need their TASC/GED and will participate in construction training in June. Hours are split between classroom and work site, Monday-Friday. Students "learn and earn," being paid a stipend and wage for participation, up to $350 every two weeks.
