WVU Tech, WVSU plan commencement ceremonies

West Virginia University Institute of Technology and West Virginia State University soon will recognize their newest classes of graduates.

WVU Tech hosts its 117th commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. today in the Neal D. Baisi Athletic Center gymnasium, 405 Fayette Pike, Montgomery.

This year's commencement speaker is Charles A. "Mickey" Reeves, vice president and managing director of Jacobs Consultancy in Houston, Texas. Reeves is a 1978 magna cum laude graduate of WVU Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering.

The ceremony, with more than 180 graduates, will also announce the recipients of WVU Tech's Presidential Leadership and First-Year Student Excellence awards.

Golden Alumni from the graduating class of 1966 will attend and be recognized during the event.

West Virginia State University, in Institute, will have more than 270 students who will graduate at 10 a.m. on May 14 during a commencement ceremony in the D. Stephen and Diane H. Walker Convocation Center.

Charles Patton, president and chief operating officer of Appalachian Power, will serve as the commencement speaker. As president of Appalachian Power, Patton has been appointed by West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin to chair the state's Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Council, charged with advancing STEM education in West Virginia. He also has been appointed by Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe to serve on the Climate Change and Resiliency Commission.

WVSU holds commencement ceremonies in December and May of each year.
