Several groups now accepting registration for summer camps

Several area groups and organizations are accepting registration for camps and programs for children this summer. They are:

The visual and performing arts academy is teaming up with Toyota and the City of Hurricane's Parks and Recreation Commission to offer an "Artistic Discovery Camp" for students in grades 1-12. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 18-22 at Valley Park in Hurricane. Camps include: The Artistic Discovery Camp - students can discover their artistic talent and passion by having hands-on experience in five different performing and visual art subjects each day. Tuition is $50 for the week. Toyota will pick up the other $100 for the first 40 participant's registered. Students will participate in dance, theater, music/drums, choir and art daily. The week-long experience will conclude with a performance and art exhibit. Space is limited. Registration is now open and is on a first come, first served basis.

Arts in Action is pleased to also offer four other camps: The Princess Academy for little girls ages 3-9 (July 11-15), Camp Rhythm music camp for students ages 6-12 (July 11-15), the Dance Intensive dance camp for students in grades K-5 (August 1-4) and the Acrobatic Arts camp for students K-12 (August 22-25). Camp Horseshoe, Horseshoe Leadership Center in St. George, is a camp for teenagers and children looking for a special summer week.

Teen camps include the high school Teen Leadership Summit held on June 12-18; Teen Entrepreneurship Summit, June 19-25; and middle school Leadership Summit on June 26-July 2. There will be active learning sessions with plenty of time for recreation, the great outdoors, campfires, a talent show, swimming and much more.

Adventure Camps for boys and girls ages 7-12 have four weeks to choose from: July 3-9, July 10-16, July 17-23 and July 24-30. Horseshoe is a special place to grow in the mountains of West Virginia. Jamie Johnson and ART26201 will offer a Young Filmmakers Camp from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, June 27-July 1 at LASCAUX Micro-Theater in Buckhannon. The five-day workshop will teach students, ages around 10-12 , the fundamentals of filmmaking. This project is designed to engage the student in creative thinking and then to produce a film from their ideas. Students will receive hands-on experience in acting, directing, filming, editing and writing a narrative film. Students will experience what it is like to be on a film crew, and to work collaboratively. By the end of the week, students will not only complete a shot-by-shot remake of a famous Hollywood film scene, but they will also create a short film (3 to 5 minutes) based on one of the scripts developed at the camp that week.

Snacks and drinks will be provided, however, students will be asked to bring a lunch daily. (3/4 Cafe will be open Wednesday-Friday). All classes will be held at Lascaux Micro-Theater. At the end of the camp we plan to host a premiere of all completed work, and students, parents, and friends will get to see the participants films on the big screen. The fee is $100. This weeklong experience for children ages 3 years through eighth grade includes art, acting, creative writing, song writing, music and yoga, led by Charleston artists, musicians and Montessori educators including Alasha Al-Qudwah, Ian Bode, Caitlin Brash, Adam Bryan, Dionne Canterbury, Steph Hyre, John Inghram, Melissa Menon and Rebecca Recco.

Primary Art Colony (ages 3-5) will be held June 20-24; Elementary Art Colony (grades 1-6) will be held July 11-15; and Middle School Art Colony will be held July 18-22. All camps will be held at the Charleston Montessori School campus, 319 W. Washington Street, Charleston.

n June 13-17, Kanawha County 4-H Younger Camp, ages 9 to 13

Cost is $185 if registered by May 25 and $50 deposit paid. A $25 late fee is charged after May 25. Last day to register is June 1, 2016. Location is Camp Virgil Tate.

4-H Day Camps:

n June 27-July 1, 4-H Cloverbud Day Camp for youth completing grades K-2

n June 27-July 1, 4-H Science Day Camp for youth completing grades 3-6

Cost is $75 and must be paid prior to camp to ensure your place in camp. Lunch provided. These camps are held at Coonskin Park, Riverside Shelter.

Imagination, creativity, interactive play, and movement through dance, crafts and music will all be part of the princess experience at Hurricane's Arts in Action studios. Girls ages 3-9 will be taught to explore their value and worth through God's eyes and will be built up and celebrated as the princess God has created them to be. "The Princess Academy" will be held from July 11-15. The day camp will begin at 9 a.m., daily, will conclude at noon and will be held at Arts in Action's main studios at 2658 Main St. in Hurricane.

Little girls will have lots of fun with tiaras, tutus, castles, crafts, tea and a ball. The day camp will feature instruction in ballet and creative movement where girls dance in Cinderella's Ballroom, creative arts where treasures are made in Ariel's Treasure Cavern, and where music and dramatic play will take place in Rapunzel's Tower of Imagination. Princesses learn table etiquette as they enjoy a healthy snack during their daily Tea in Belle's Tea Room. The experience will conclude with a "Happily Ever After Ball" for all of the princesses and their family and friends. Princesses receive a new ball gown for their Royal evening, perform a princess ballet and sing one of their favorite princess songs with movement.

The cost of the weeklong experience is only $150 and includes a Princess Academy T-shirt, a tiara, a ball gown, princess treasures and their own princess tea cup.

Enrollment is now open for this summer camp for gifted children, rising 5th-12th graders, held June 19-July 2 on the campus of West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon. The program has a venerable 33-year history at Wesleyan.

The two-week, residential program offers advanced classes in physics, higher math, creative writing, computer programming, history, and environmental science. These classes are all taught by college professors experienced in teaching to the gifted. Students room with their age-mates in an air-conditioned dorm, eat college food and socialize. They are supervised by college-age counselors who serve as guides and mentors.

West Virginia Wesleyan offers extensive facilities (swimming pool, basketball and tennis courts, baseball and soccer fields, a walking trail, a full library, music practice rooms, a planetarium, and a new arts center). Activities include movies, guest speakers, group activities, short trips off campus, and a talent show at the end of camp.
