Demolition began this week on South Charleston Fire Station No. 1, on Fourth Avenue, which was first occupied in 1960. City officials said the 55-year-old building was cramped and that the firefighters need more room. The city plans to build a new station house on the site and the lot next to it. The new firehouse is expected to cost more than $2.6 million and work is expected to begin in the first week of October.
