Come next year, there could be two Mooneys in Congress.
Rep. Alex Mooney's brother, Pat, is running for an open House seat in Florida, while Alex seeks re-election in West Virginia's 2nd Congressional District.
Pat Mooney is running in a crowded Republican primary in Florida's 6th Congressional District, representing Daytona Beach and surrounding areas. The seat has been held by Rep. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, since 2013, but DeSantis is running for the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Marco Rubio, who ran for president.
"Alex is one of my best friends and the best brother a person could ask for," Pat Mooney said through a spokesperson. "We were both raised in a house that valued freedom, service and taking principled positions. It would be [an] honor to serve the people of Florida's with my brother at my side."
Both Pat Mooney and Alex Mooney declined interview requests.
"I wish my brother the best of luck and support him in his race," Alex Mooney said in a prepared statement. "My priority is working for the people of West Virginia's 2nd Congressional District."
Much like Alex, who won his first term in Congress in 2014 after several previous campaigns in other states, Pat Mooney has a deep background in conservative politics.
He is a partner and managing director of Response America, a marketing firm that does direct mail fundraising for Republican candidates.
Response America currently does work for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the National Republican Congressional Committee, the Republican National Committee and a smattering of senators and congressmen.
There is a long history of brothers serving together in Congress. The Muhlenberg brothers, Frederick and John Peter Gabriel, both represented Pennsylvania in the first Congress in 1789.
More recently, Sen. Carl Levin and Rep. Sandy Levin, both Democrats, represented Michigan together for 32 years in Congress before Carl retired in 2014.
Pat Mooney is one of six Republican candidates running in the state's August primary.
Alex Mooney won a crowded Republican primary in 2014 after he vastly out-fundraised his opponents and then beat Democrat Nick Casey in the general election.
He faces Marc Savitt, a Jefferson County businessman, in the Republican primary. Savitt supports businessman Donald Trump for president, while Mooney chairs the West Virginia campaign of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.
The Democratic candidates for the 2nd Congressional District, which represents Charleston and stretches from Putnam County through the Eastern Panhandle, are Mark Hunt, Tom Payne, Harvey Peyton, Cory Simpson and Robert "Robin" Wilson Jr.
