Fayetteville man critical following shooting

A Fayetteville man is in critical condition after his next door neighbor shot him in the chest on Wednesday, according to police.

Ira Hunter Shockey, 20, was shot in the chest once by Eric Christopher England, 49, at 104 Smith Street in Fayetteville, according to a news release from the Fayetteville Police Department.

"Shockey was supposedly shot after refusing England's sexual advances," the release stated. "It appeared that both subjects were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident."

Officers responded at about 1:45 a.m. Wednesday. Shockey was taken to Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley where he needed surgery for his wounds.

England was charged with one count of malicious wounding. He was arraigned by Magistrate Charles Garvin and released after posting a $5,000 bond, the release stated.

Patrolman R.M. Fox is the lead investigator.
