Appalachian Power awarded more than $10,000 in grants to about 40 teachers across West Virginia, the company says.
The company, a subsidiary of American Electric Power, handed out $10,250 in AEP Teacher Vision grants, according to a news release. The program was launched in 2003 to provide aid to teachers with grant amounts ranging from $100 to $500.
"These grants are designed to reward the talents and creativity of Pre-K through grade 12 educators devoted to motivating youth to think creatively, to step into leadership roles and to address the challenges of the future," Jeri Matheney, a spokeswoman for Appalachian Power, said in the release.
Teachers who live or teach in AEP service areas are eligible to apply for the mini-grants, according to the release. Projects that have an academic focus and a goal of improving student achievement are eligible for consideration. The company has a special interest in mathematics, science, technology, electrical safety and the balanced study of energy and the environment, the release states.
