n WDTV reports that the population in the regional jails is declining. According to WDTV, Lawrence Messina, spokesman for the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, said it costs less to fund day report centers and community corrections.
n Carter Machinery announced that more than 30 employees had been laid off Thursday afternoon. The company blamed the downtown in the coal industry, according to MetroNews.
n The Department of Justice sued Charleston Area Medical Center and St. Mary's Medical Center, accusing the hospitals of limiting competition. MetroNews reports the Department of Justice says CAMC had agreed not to advertise in Cabell County, while St. Mary's had agreed not to advertise in Kanawha County.
n Those struggling with drug addiction in Mason County now have a local help line they can call. According to the Point Pleasant Daily Register, The Meeting House, a church-based center for recovery services, the sheriff's office and other donors contributed funds.
