Four Ohio residents killed in wrong-way crash on Turnpike

Four people are dead and five were hospitalized after an crash involving a wrong-way driver in Raleigh County, State Police said.

An Ohio family of eight was traveling north on the West Virginia Turnpike when their Ford Explorer SUV was hit head on by a Dodge Ram 1500 pick-up truck traveling south in the northbound lane, troopers said.

The driver of the Ford Explorer and three of its passengers died at the scene. The four other Ford passengers and the driver of the Dodge remain at an area hospital. The crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. Monday morning at mile marker 34, about 10 miles south of Beckley, troopers said.

Troopers said the family was believed to be returning back to Ohio from a trip.

Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash and charges are expected, troopers said.
