Nicholas County's Superintendent will retire at the end of the school year.

Keith Butcher, who has been Nicholas County's chief school official since 2014, announced his decision to step down during a Monday school board meeting. He said his retirement will be effective June 30.

Butcher has been an educator and school administrator for 40 years.

Butcher said he'll end his career where it started: in Nicholas County. His first teaching position was at Zela Elementary.

"I have had the opportunity to work in education at the classroom, school, county and state levels, but I am most proud of my work as a classroom teacher," Butcher said. "Nothing in education is of greater importance than making a positive difference in the lives of students."

During his career, Butcher also served as a teacher, principal, regional education service agency director and director of instruction, federal programs and accountability for the state Department of Education.

Before coming back to Nicholas County, Butcher was superintendent of Fayette County Schools for two years.

Butcher became an Internet sensation earlier this year for his snow day rendition of Adele's pop hit, "Hello." A recording of the song, which parodies "Hello's" lyrics, went viral and garnered the attention of local and national media. Butcher, who has a music degree from Concord University, also announced cancellations this winter to the tune of the Beatles' "Let It Be" and the popular song, "Let It Go," from the movie "Frozen."
