A Dunbar man accused in a shooting in December on Charleston's East End has been extradited from California to stand charges in Kanawha County on first-degree robbery and malicious wounding.

Adrian Darrnell Patterson, 30, was arrested in California after police received a tip about his whereabouts, according to Lt. Steve Cooper, chief of detectives for the Charleston Police Department.

Patterson was transferred to West Virginia on Thursday and is being held in South Central Regional Jail. He had not yet been arraigned as of late Friday.

Patterson is accused of shooting and robbing Timothy Mitchell last December on Bradford Street.

Mitchell was walking his dog just before 8 p.m. on Dec. 15, when Patterson approached him, according to a criminal complaint filed in magistrate court by Charleston Det. J.J. Weaver.

The two men struggled and Mitchell was shot twice, Weaver wrote. Patterson took $200 from Mitchell, according to police.

During the struggle, Patterson dropped his cell phone, the complaint states. Mitchell took the cell phone and then walked to CAMC General Hospital. He was shot in the torso and lower thigh.

Using the cell phone, police were able to identify Patterson, the complaint states, and a warrant was issued in December for his arrest.

Someone who knows Patterson told police that he believed Patterson was staying in California, said Cooper. Charleston police contacted law enforcement officials there, who eventually made the arrest.

Kanawha prosecutors made the decision to extradite Patterson to West Virginia.

Patterson has been charged in the past with domestic battery.

In 2012, police wrote in a criminal complaint that Patterson's then-girlfriend called Kanawha Metro 911 dispatchers and said Patterson hit her in the face after she refused to give him money.
