WHEELING, W.Va. - A memorial is planned at Wheeling's Heritage Port to honor the city's fallen firefighters.
Firefighter Bob Heldreth tells The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register that the memorial will be about 4 feet tall. It will have a brick base with a plaque engraved with the names of 18 firefighters who have died in the line of duty since the Wheeling Fire Department became a paid department in 1869.
Heldreth says the top of the monument will have a bronze sculpture with a pair of boots, an ax and a firefighter's helment.
Supplies and labor have been donated for the project. Heldreth says organizers are raising money for the sculpture.
The fire department is working with Firefighters Local 12 on the project.
