ELKINS, W.Va. - Two men have been charged with illegally trafficking guns from West Virginia to Maryland.

U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld says a federal grand jury in Elkins returned an indictment charging Jarrud Dixon, 26, of New Market, Maryland, and Robert Sales, 32, of Mount Airy, Maryland.

An investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives found Dixon and Sales conspired with a licensed dealer in Pocahontas County to transport firearms across state lines. The dealer was barred from doing so except for sales to certain authorized individuals.

Prosecutors say the intended recipient was Dixon's girlfriend, who had a West Virginia identification card, although Dixon and Sales actually bought the guns.

If convicted, the charges carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison and $250,000 in fines.
