Charleston Police Department is now taking applications from sixth- to eighth-grade students who want to participate in the department's junior police and leadership academy.
The program is open to students attending Charleston middle schools and preference will be given to Charleston residents.
The free academy begins on Monday, July 11 and continues through Friday, July 15.
Classes will be held from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. at George Washington High School. Parents can drop off their children between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m.
Applications are available at the Charleston Police Department public services division, at each middle school, and online at www.charlestonwvpolice.org. Applications should be returned to the police department by April 1.
