The West Virginia State Treasurer's Office has reunited the West Virginia Special Olympics and the Girls Scouts of Black Diamond with $17,000 worth of unclaimed property checks.

In total, the Special Olympics will receive $7,373 and the Girl Scouts will receive $9,729 in unclaimed property.

According to the news release sent out by State Treasurer John Perdue's office, unclaimed property can include things like forgotten utility deposits, forgotten checking accounts, abandoned safe deposit boxes and liquidated stocks.

In the cases of the Special Olympics and the Girl Scouts, the largest source of the unclaimed property was checking accounts started by local chapters and then abandoned, according to the statement.
