West Virginia Junior College in Charleston was evacuated Tuesday morning after electrical equipment in the building short circuited and filled the second floor with a smoky smell.
The Charleston Fire Department responded to the scene on Virginia Street East at 11:11 a.m. Tuesday. After evacuating students, teachers and others in the building, officials investigated for a potential electrical fire.
Capt. Mark Strickland said equipment on the second floor short circuited and tripped the building's breaker, which prevented it and the building from being damaged.
"The equipment operated correctly," he said.
On Tuesday morning, students and teachers reported smelling something burning in two rooms on the building's second floor. Others said they could see smoke.
Fawn Atkins, a librarian who was giving a class presentation, said the odor was coming from above the drop ceiling on the second floor. She said it was a smoky smell.
Charleston fire sent six trucks along with two ambulances and investigators.
There were no injuries, and no one inhaled smoke, Strickland said.
By noon, the building was cleared and students were given the OK to return to class.
