About 100 feet of Laidley Street must be replaced after a burst water line damaged the road last week.
The frigid temperatures preceding last weekend's snowstorm likely led to a failing connection between two service lines, Charleston City Engineer Chris Knox said Wednesday.
When West Virginia American Water repaired the issue, workers found that the force of the break "heaved the roadway up," Knox said.
The water company contracted with Oval Construction of Charleston to repair the stretch of Laidley Street, next to Slack Plaza and the Transit Mall.
West Virginia American Water spokeswoman Laura Jordan said the concrete demolition is expected to wrap up Wednesday. Its replacement, she said, will be done in three sections, with the street portion to be completed by Monday, weather permitting.
Jordan said all three sections of that stretch of Laidley Street, including sidewalks, should be finished by the middle of next week.
"There may be some additional time for the concrete to cure before the area is reopened to vehicles," she added.
The bus stop in the 200 block of Laidley has been relocated to Summers Street while the road is fixed.
Once work is completed, the bus stop will move for good to the 100 block of Laidley Street between Virginia and Quarrier streets.
"It's crowded on Summers Street and creating a traffic mess over there," Knox said.
Knox said it's not the snow, but the below-freezing temperatures that often contribute to burst water lines.
