CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia officials are advising residents to take precautions to avoid the risk of injuries during storm cleanup efforts.

Dr. Rahul Gupta, commissioner and state health officer of the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, said in a statement Monday that residents should use caution during snow removal and debris clean-up.

Officials say the risk of exertion brought on by shoveling lots of snow can cause serious health concerns.

Health officials urge resident who aren't used to strenuous work activity to allow plenty of time to do the work and rest often.

The department also advises residents using a chainsaw to follow the manufacturer's safety instructions. Trees entangled in power lines must be deferred to the local power company.
