A man was arrested Tuesday after a short police pursuit in Charleston's East End resulted in a crash involving a city vehicle.
Charleston police responded at about 11:30 a.m. to a report of a man driving erratically while heading south on Greenbrier Street in a Ford F-250 pickup truck. An officer tried to stop the man, who was later identified as 24-year-old Eric Gomez, but he ignored the officer's emergency lights and turned west onto Washington Street East, according to a press release from Sgt. Mark Kinder, Charleston's traffic division commander.
At the intersection of Washington Street East and Elizabeth Street, Gomez disobeyed the traffic light and struck a city vehicle, which hit another vehicle on Elizabeth Street. As a result of the crash, one person was transported to Charleston Area Medical Center with minor injuries and was later released.
Gomez tried to flee the scene on foot but was apprehended a short time later. Authorities determined Gomez had stolen the vehicle he was driving. He was charged with transferring and receiving a stolen vehicle, fleeing DUI and fleeing DUI causing injury.
