At the same time Dem 2 Brothers And A Grill was moving into a larger space on the West Side, owner Adrian Wright also had to find the time to assemble dozens of children's bicycles.
The restaurant is holding a Christmas Bike Giveaway for Charleston youths, with more than 50 bikes and helmets available.
It's Wright's way of giving back to the community that's made his career as a barbecue connoisseur a success story.
When he first told people of his idea to give away that many bikes for Christmas, "Everybody was like, 'Man, you're crazy,' but that's what I wanted to do," Wright said. "I've always loved bikes; when I was a kid, I used to buy people's old bikes, fix and paint them, then sell them to kids for cheap."
To enter for the giveaway, kids must film a short video explaining why they need a new bike for Christmas, then submit it on Dem 2 Brothers' website.
Despite informing the city's schools and various youth organizations, as well as his customers, of the giveaway, Wright had only gotten six video entries as of Thursday.
Others would see a line of kids' bikes outside the restaurant and ask Wright how much they cost.
"I said, 'they're not for sale, but you can win one for your kid if you just send a video in,'" he said. But few have responded.
Regardless of how many entries come in, Wright said he'll still donate any extra bikes left over. Most have 20-inch tires.
The giveaway will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Dem 2 Brothers And A Grill, 423 Virginia St. W. Those who submitted entries will have first priority, but any extras will be given to kids who stop by and ask, Wright said. Scores of smaller gifts for children under 5 also will be available.
"Hopefully, next year it will get bigger," said Wright, who hopes to make the bike giveaway an annual event.
To enter the giveaway, shoot a video explaining in 60 seconds or less why you need a bike for Christmas, then upload it to YouTube with the hashtag #D2bGChristmasBikeGiveaway in the title. Applicants should then go to www.dem2brosgrill.com and fill out their contact information to submit their video. The contest is only open for kids in grades 1 through 8 who live in Charleston.
