Essays on Faith: 'I wonder as I wander'

In the twinkling of an eye, nature was in transition. The fall season said its goodbye, wandering off stage.

People have wondered down through he ages what existed beyond a mountain or on the other side of an ocean. We all have an itch, once in a while, to vacate the premises, to see and enjoy the new. Hey, it led to the discovery of America!

People wander in and out of our lives continuously. And occasionally I wonder, is it happenstance? Recently I have begun to wonder about the "know-it-alls" we meet in the political realm. It's enough to give anyone indigestion.

One wonders, along with an ancient sage, "What are human beings that you are mindful of them?" What makes a person "tick"? Being 21, renting an apartment and owning a set of wheels doesn't necessarily make a person an adult.

Sometimes a bit of wisdom visits our minds, and we acknowledge that we only know in part. Surely that says something about our religious faith, as well. There is personal infinity, challenging and promising, and no intellectual book-ends will ever change that!

One may feel, "Shoot, isn't it enough that we know God loves us? He wants us to have peace and that blessed assurance. Isn't that right?" Certainly! But if we reach a point where we write "finis" to the drama of God and people, it would simply shelve that relationship.

God has more love and understanding that He wants to give each of us, so that we may lay hold of every opportunity to help others.

You have to wonder as you wander out under the blue skies.

Dr. Lamb is parish associate, First Presbyterian Church, Charleston.
