The latest auction held by the state treasurer's office featured a 1902 bank note from the Charleston National Bank.

The $5 note sold for $1,000 to a West Virginia bidder, said Greg Stone, a spokesman for the office.

"The treasurer is always glad when a West Virginia bidder claims something that has some significance, in this case some local historical significance," Stone said.

The auction ended Thursday.

The treasurer's auctions feature unclaimed property in safe deposit boxes. They usually last about two weeks, depending on the amount of inventory the office has. Money from auctioning items is given back to the account holder of the safe deposit box and held for when they, or their heirs, claim it.

Auctions are held online at www.westvirginiaunclaimedproperty.org.
